Lab visit grant from international society for heart research (ISHR) for Alexia van Rinsum
May 11th marked the start of the XXV world conference of the International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) in Japan. The ISHR offered an Early Career Investigator Visiting Research Fellowship to facilitate lab visits in Japan. After getting into contact with Prof. James Pearson of the Department of Cardiac Physiology in the National Cerebral and cardiovascular Centre, a leading institution in Japan, we noticed a lot of similarities in our research goals and potential for future collaboration. For example, we both focus on the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in driving cardiac dysfunction in lifestyle diseases. Together, we applied for the lab visit fellowship and were excited when we were awarded one of the grants. The conference itself was interesting with talks from experts all over the world and gave me not only some new connections, but new ideas within my own research. After the conference, I visited the lab of Prof. Pearson where I learned techniques that we can and will apply within our own research. Furthermore, it yielded some interesting discussions and fostered collaboration with extended invitations to visit each other’s labs in the future.
