Providing weather information to coffee farmers in Tanzania

Olam International is a leading agri-business operating from seed to shelf in 70 countries, supplying food and industrial raw materials to over 23,000 customers worldwide. Our team of 70,000 employees has built a leadership position in many businesses including cocoa, coffee, cashew, rice and cotton.

OLAM (and CGIAR) are working together with Kukua weather services to provide better weather information to farmers. Kukua aims to: “... close Africa’s weather information gap by leveraging new weather station technology and improved weather forecast accuracy. Our sustainable solution will provide accurate weather data and forecasts to smallholder farmers, commercial farmers and other stakeholders throughout Africa.”

As OLAM, we are rolling out digital tracking/communication systems to farmers. Our aim is to use a digital portal to provide ‘bundled services’, including weather, technical advice, credit services, mobile phone payments etc

We are looking for a Master student from January till March (length of internship can be discussed in consultation) who can work together with us to improve weather related advice to our coffee farmers in the Kagera Region in Tanzania. We expect students to help us with questions relating to the agronomic/practices side and questions on how to best communicate / translate these messages into something that the farmers can use.
