Transition modelling and analyses

At Wageningen University & Research, we specialize in advanced transition modelling and analysis to support the transformative changes needed for sustainable food and bio-based systems. These tools enable us to explore impacts, identify critical drivers, and illuminate pathways for systemic change. By integrating multiple disciplines, scales, and system outcomes, we help create systems that include environmental and social costs while aligning with local contexts and cultures.

Modelling approaches for different scales

Our expertise spans a range of modelling approaches designed to address challenges at different scales. For instance, the Circular Food System (CiFoS) model enables stakeholders to explore transitions from linear to circular food systems. This biophysical optimization tool can be applied at various scales, offering insights into resource flows and helping design resilient systems. Similarly, we connect personal health with local food production through high-tech solutions. By employing a simulation approach integrating food and health sectors, we evaluate how local food systems can contribute to individual health outcomes, aligning production with community well-being.

From farm-level optimization to macro-Level transitions

At the farm (micro) level, WUR’s FarmAnalytics bio-economic optimization model bridges the gap between agricultural practices and ecosystem service delivery. This tool enables farmers and policymakers to explore payment structures for ecosystem services and optimize decisions that balance productivity with sustainability. At a macro level, the MAGNET model assesses systemic transitions in food systems and bio-economies. By integrating socio-economic and environmental dimensions, this model evaluates policy impacts and guides large-scale transformations.

Combining tools with systemic insights

WUR’s approach to transition modelling combines cutting-edge tools with a deep understanding of the complexity of systemic change and the underlying mechanisms. Whether it’s optimizing farm-level decisions, redesigning local food systems, or shaping global policy, our services provide actionable insights and frameworks for meaningful transformation.
